The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, known for his close ties to the Catholicos of All Armenians Karekin II, has resigned from his current position in the Anglican Church.
According to Report, the resignation comes in the wake of a damning report that revealed Welby's role in covering up child abuse within the church.
Welby had knowledge of the abusive actions of priest John Smith, who allegedly perpetrated acts of violence against children in Christian holiday camps across the United Kingdom, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. Despite being aware of these heinous crimes, Welby chose to conceal the truth for years.
The Archbishop's resignation is a direct response to the mounting pressure he faced following the publication of the report. While Welby had previously been received by President Ilham Aliyev and attempted to portray himself as tolerant and peace-loving, his close association with Karekin II and his pro-Armenian stance have been well-known throughout his tenure.
As for Welby's potential successor, Graham Usher, who recently led the Anglican delegation at the COP16 climate conference in Kalida, is seen as a likely candidate. The current Labour government may look favorably upon his nomination or that of another religious leader sensitive to climate issues.
