Experts warn of largest food crisis in world history

The disruption of supply chains due to the Ukrainian crisis will lead to fertilizer shortages and deprive farmers of the ability to produce enough crops, reads an article in the German Compact newspaper, Report informs via RIA Novosti.

"Next year will be one of the toughest food crises in human history," the newspaper cited Matthias Berninger, an official at the chemical-pharmaceutical transnational corporation Bayer AG.

His point of view is shared by German economist Matin Qaim, according to whom the global famine could affect up to one hundred million people.

According to the head of the UN World Food Program David Beasley, the lack of food will provoke large-scale migration tides, against which the 2015 crisis "will look like a summer picnic."

Europe has already faced rising fuel prices and food inflation provoked by it. Annual inflation in 19 eurozone countries reached 7.4% in March.
