The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is implementing the "Improvement of Seed and Agrochemical Laboratories and Certification Services under the Agrarian Services Agency" project in Azerbaijan to boost seed productivity, Kaan Basaran, the Program Specialist at the FAO Partnership and Coordination Office in Azerbaijan, told Report.
According to him, the project aims to improve the quality of analysis in the field of seed production: “Certification of quality seeds is an important point to increase productivity in seed production. For this purpose, we are implementing another project to enhance potato seed production in Azerbaijan. In general, we consider developing this sector. It envisages certification, introduction of varieties, increasing the potential of seed varieties. Here, it is expedient to bring the legislation in line with international standards, to create companies to operate in this field to increase local production of seeds.”
Basaran believes that the improvement of certification means ensuring the enhancement of the sector in the long run, which will be possible by bringing the legislation in line with standards: "We plan to work in this area within the project."
It is worth noting that the opening ceremony of the project was held on May 16. Within the framework of the technical support program between FAO and Azerbaijan, a project on the development of seed production was implemented in 2015-2017.
