World wine consumption hits record low since 2002

Global wine consumption in 2020 was down 3 percent compared to 2019, reaching its lowest level since 2002, according to the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), Report informs.

At the same time, wine production in the world last year increased by 1 percent compared to 2019, to 260 million hectoliters.

“World wine consumption in 2020 is estimated at 234 mhl, marking a 3% decrease compared to 2019 and reaching the lowest recorded level of consumption since 2002,” reads the report.

The decline in wine consumption in the world was due to the restriction of the work of bars and restaurants, a decrease in the number of tourist trips during the coronavirus pandemic. The most significant decline in wine consumption accounted for China (-17.4 percent) and South Africa (-19.4 percent), while in Russia there was a slight increase (3 percent). The biggest increase in wine consumption was in Brazil (18.4 percent).

In 2020, the production of cognac in Azerbaijan increased by 7.6 percent, beer - by 7.7 percent, while production of vodka decreased by 8.8 percent and wine by 52.7 percent.
