The EU plans to implement a ‘green city’ project in Azerbaijan, Victor Bojkov, the head of the Cooperation Department of the EU Delegation in Azerbaijan, told Report.
He said that the project can be implemented in Mingachevir and Sumgayit cities.
The project covers the creation of a green environment, digital coordination, he noted.
“At the end of September, we will hold meetings with the ministries of economy, ecology, and natural resources. After that, we will understand what the government wants, what it is interested in. After this meeting, we will have plans for the project,” he added.
‘Green city’ is one of the five priorities for the period after 2020 in the next working document of the Eastern Partnership program of the European Commission. These priorities include supporting a sustainable, innovative, green, and competitive economy through direct support for small and medium-sized businesses, innovative rural development, planting trees at the port of Baku, supporting a digital transport corridor, and developing the concept of smart and green cities.
The document says that the EU and international financial institutions are ready to support ‘smart and green’ cities with energy efficiency in certain regions. It places particular emphasis on sustainable urban mobility and waste management.
