Italian automaker Lamborghini has announced that it will switch to the production of hybrid and all-electric supercars, Report informs referring to Vedomosti newspaper.

By the end of 2024, all cars produced by the company should become hybrid. Over four years, the company plans to allocate 1.5 billion euros ($1.8 billion) for the transition to hybrid models. The main goal of this transition is to reduce CO2 emissions by 50 percent by the beginning of 2025.

“Lamborghini’s electrification plan is a newly plotted course, necessary in the context of a radically changing world, where we want to make our contribution by continuing to reduce environmental impact through concrete projects,” Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann said in a statement. He emphasized that this plan, which begins with a celebration of the combustion engine, will take the company toward a “more sustainable future while always remaining faithful to our DNA.”

Lamborghini plans to present first electric car before 2030. Electric and hybrid models will receive new technical solutions and lightweight materials that should compensate for the increase in mass due to electric motors and batteries.

According to McLaren Automotive CEO Mike Flewitt, EV technology is not currently suitable for supercars.
