AZAL: Refineries need to be modernized for LCAF production

Oil refineries should not be closed but modernized for the production of Low-Carbon Aviation Fuel (LCAF), Samir Rzayev, President of Azerbaijan Airlines (AZAL), said during high-level panel discussions "International Aviation and Climate Change" at COP29, Report informs.

Samir Rzayev noted that to meet aviation fuel needs from 2023 to 2050, it is necessary to produce 7 million barrels of fuel per day.

"We are talking about the need for 7 million barrels of fuel per day for aviation from 2023 to 2050. If converted to LCAF, this would be equivalent to using 1 million barrels of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) per day. However, according to current forecasts, SAF production volume will not exceed 600,000 barrels in the coming years," he said.

In this context, according to Rzayev, significant attention to LCAF production is an important aspect of cooperation.
