Those who bear the least responsibility are affected by the water crisis the most, Mary Creagh, the UK Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, told a COP29 event on water resources held in Baku, Report informs.
Creagh noted that the environmental crisis is inextricably linked to water scarcity: "2023 was the driest year for rivers in 30 years, leading to significant economic consequences. One can see the scale of this process's impact on food systems, transport, and clean energy production. Today, we are pleased to announce that the United Kingdom supports the COP29 Water Declaration."
Creagh stated that cleaning rivers, lakes, and seas is a top priority in the United Kingdom, and while it's not an easy task, solutions exist. "Through the UK's 'Just Transitions for Water Security' programme, we are helping countries increase their resilience to water-related climate change," she said.
