CGIAR: Protecting coastal ecosystems important for development of biodiversity

The protection of coastal ecosystems is crucial for the development of biodiversity in Azerbaijan, Katherine Leitzel, an official of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), told Report.

According to Leitzel, measures implemented to protect biodiversity along the Caspian Sea coast in Azerbaijan can make a significant contribution to the sustainable development of coastal ecosystems: "Successful strategies and project experiences can drive large-scale measures and strengthen the synergistic effect of ecosystem protection."

The guest noted that ecosystems such as mangrove forests, salt marshes, and marine grasslands are not only important centers for biodiversity but also key tools for increasing coastal community resilience, supporting climate change adaptation, and removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Leitzell emphasized that the protection and restoration of these ecosystems is crucial not only for nature conservation but also for ensuring food security, health, and economic benefits for millions of people: "Long-term strategies and close cooperation with local communities are essential for sustainable management of carbon-rich ecosystems. Community needs and recommendations should be the main priority in this process."

She also emphasized the importance of multifunctional spatial planning for the protection and restoration of coastal ecosystems: "An integrated approach to land and ocean use requires knowledge, funding, and collaboration at all management levels. Broader and coordinated global action is needed to support climate, biodiversity, and human well-being."
