The US expects to receive 90 million tourists by 2027, Diana Walker, Senior Advisor to the US Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, said at the first ministerial meeting on improving climate action in the tourism sector held on the sidelines of COP29 in Baku, Report informs.
According to Walker, the US government's National Travel and Tourism Strategy was adopted in 2022 as a key document in tourism policy: "The strategy aims to attract 90 million tourists to the US by 2027, ensuring comprehensive and inclusive tourism development. Fighting climate change and promoting sustainable tourism are also among the strategy's priorities.".
Among the main goals of the strategy, special attention is given to reducing the impact of travel and tourism on climate change and building resilience in the tourism sector against natural disasters and public health threats, according to Walker. Additionally, it provides for the protection of natural resources, support for the tourism industry, and ensuring equitable development.
"We fully support the declaration on tourism and thank the COP29 chairman for bringing this topic up for discussion. We look forward to the next steps in developing adaptation and mitigation measures in the tourism sector," added the US representative.
