The government of Azerbaijan is actively preparing for the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), the Minister of Foreign Affairs of East Timor, Bendito dos Santos Freitas, said in an interview with Report's US bureau.
"We highly appreciate the country's efforts in hosting this crucial event," he noted.
"Climate change and its consequences – rising sea levels, droughts, and water scarcity – are among the key challenges the entire world is grappling with. That's why I believe COP29 is extremely important," the Foreign Minister emphasized. "Last year, at COP28, truly significant decisions were made. Holding COP29 in Azerbaijan is vital for the countries of the region and the world. We anticipate the adoption of important resolutions at COP29."
The minister also noted that bilateral cooperation between East Timor and Azerbaijan has been established in many areas.
"Our leader visited Azerbaijan last year and held very important meetings. Moreover, decisions were made on bilateral cooperation between government officials of both countries. Our cooperation is built on a solid foundation, and we hope to expand it in many directions. Meetings on these issues are also planned within the framework of COP29," the Foreign Minister concluded.
