Enrique Ochoa: World rapidly moving towards climate catastrophe

All recent climate reports indicate that the world is rapidly moving towards a climate catastrophe, Mexico's Deputy Secretary for Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, Enrique Ochoa, said at a high-level meeting during COP29, according to Report.

"There will be no safe place on the planet if global temperatures rise by 3 degrees. This will happen if we don't radically and immediately change course. There is no room for retreat from climate commitments and unilateral decisions," he said.

Ochoa emphasized that Mexico today reaffirms its unequivocal support for multilateral efforts in fighting the climate crisis. The Mexican government has announced a new National Energy Plan that aims to increase the percentage of clean energy electricity generation to above 40% by 2030, he noted.

"The Federal Electricity Commission will invest $23.4 billion to achieve this goal without compromising the reliability of the national grid or energy accessibility. We will also promote responsible private sector participation through investments," Ochoa said.

The Mexican representative also called on parties to cooperate in achieving collective financial goals. "There are no effective climate actions without a comprehensive approach based on human rights, recognizing the rights of indigenous peoples, youth, and addressing structural inequalities affecting women in all their diversity. Therefore, we call on parties to adopt a new work program on gender issues and climate change," he said.
