Azerbaijan has done amazing work in preparing for COP29 since last December, and its leadership is crucial for this event, UK Ambassador to Azerbaijan Fergus Auld told the Azerbaijan office of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
According to Report, the diplomat noted that supporting Azerbaijan in successfully hosting COP29 has been the British embassy's main priority this year.
Azerbaijan has done amazing work in preparing for COP29 since last December, starting from scratch, he said, adding that Britain had two years to prepare for COP26 in Glasgow. The Azerbaijani presidency has shown initiative, listened to parties, and adapted quickly, he said.
Auld also noted that the UK has taken an important step by announcing its intention to transition to clean energy by 2030.
The country became the first major world economy to abandon coal, closing the last coal power station on September 30, Auld said.
He noted that at COP29, more detailed information about climate actions aimed at achieving the 1.5-degree target is shared. The diplomat urged every country to contrubute.
According to the ambassador, Britain intends to make efforts to achieve important goals at COP29, such as unlocking climate financing for developing countries, reducing emissions, and adapting to the consequences of climate change.
