The production and disposal of plastics will emit 3 gigatons of CO2 annually by 2050, Steffi Lemke, Germany's Minister for Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection, told journalists in Baku, Report informs.
The German minister noted that significant greenhouse gas emissions occur during the production, use, and disposal of plastics: "This problem requires urgent measures at a global level. If current trends continue, negative impacts on climate change will increase further."
The minister added that efficient use of resources and implementation of circular economy measures are key conditions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
"Transition to sustainable and closed-loop production models can ensure the preservation of natural resources while reducing energy demand," she said.
Lemke also emphasized that the German government will continue to strengthen international efforts in combating plastic pollution. She noted that the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) will play an important role in developing a legally binding international treaty on plastics.
