ILO representative: 2.4 billion workers worldwide exposed to excessive heat

Today 2.4 billion workers worldwide are exposed to excessively high temperatures, with millions more facing risks from climate threats, Beate Andrees, the Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia at the International Labour Organization (ILO), said.

According to Report, speaking during the COP29 event "From Theory to Practice for a Just Transition for All: High-Level South-South Interregional Policy Dialogue", Andrees enphasized the critical link between the social sphere and financing.

"The urgent need for effective climate action is no longer in doubt. We are witnessing the impact of climate change on society and the economy, recognizing the scale of the challenges we face," Andrees said. She further highlighted that these challenges not only threaten workers' lives and health but also undermine stability and economic growth.

However, the ILO Regional Director also pointed out the significant opportunities presented by a just energy transition and a green future.

"Investing in green jobs, sustainable enterprises, promoting circular economy principles, and creating a fairer society will help achieve our goals," she said, expressing confidence in the emergence of new jobs that support a green and just transition. Andrees acknowledged that some professions may disappear.
