Kazakhstan plans to increase the share of electric and hybrid vehicles to 30% by 2030, Kazakh Deputy Minister of Transport Talgat Lastayev said at a high-level round table within COP29 on green urban transport, Report informs.

"The development of 'green' urban transport for Kazakhstan is not only an environmental priority but also a key element of our sustainable urban development strategy. We strive to reduce our environmental footprint, as urban transport makes a significant contribution to global greenhouse gas emissions and air pollution," Lastayev emphasized.

He noted that major cities in Kazakhstan, such as Almaty and Astana, face problems with road congestion, deteriorating air quality, and increasing energy consumption.

"Solving these problems is a crucial task for the government. We are implementing promising strategies and innovative technologies that transform the urban transport system. Kazakhstan has integrated sustainable transport development goals into its national strategies, including low-carbon development, to meet international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Urban transport plays a key role in achieving these goals," noted the deputy minister.

He added that one of the main directions of this strategy is the modernization of public transport.

"Kazakhstan's cities are actively developing environmentally friendly modes of transport, such as electric buses and trams. Projects like the 'Green Lane' in the capital are aimed at integrating environmental principles into urban planning, making cities more accessible to pedestrians. We are also encouraging the use of electric vehicles through tax incentives, subsidies, and expansion of charging station infrastructure," said Lastayev.

He emphasized that environmentally friendly urban transport is both a challenge and an opportunity for sustainable development.

"Let's work together to make our cities not only centers of economic activity but also examples of environmental sustainability and high quality of life," concluded Lastayev.
