Uganda calls for enhanced climate financing and addressing migration

Uganda has reaffirmed its commitment to update its Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2025 and called for increased financial and technical support to implement climate initiatives, according to Report.

Speaking at the high-level session at COP29, Uganda Minister of Water and Environment Beatrice Anywar expressed concern over the inadequate climate financing for developing countries. She emphasized the need for a more effective support mechanism, stating that the country counts on financial assistance that will ensure simplified access for vulnerable countries, which often face difficulties in accessing such funds.

Anywar stressed that climate financing is key to successful actions.

Moreover, the minister highlighted the growing issue of climate migration in Africa, particularly affecting women and children. She proposed the Kampala Ministerial Declaration on Migration and Climate Change as a foundation for a regional solution to this problem.

"We hope that COP29 will accelerate the operation of the Loss and Damage Fund and ensure access to these resources for vulnerable communities," Anywar added.

Conveying greetings from Ugandan President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, Anywar congratulated Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the Azerbaijani presidency of COP29. She affirmed Uganda's support for the COP29 chair's position that no one should be left behind in matters of climate ambition and action.
