Azerbaijani minority supports tightening anti-discrimination laws in Georgia

Azerbaijanis living in Georgia support tightening anti-discrimination legislation in the country, Chairman of the National Congress of Azerbaijanis of Georgia (NCAG) Ali Babayev said at a briefing, Report informs.

According to Babayev, there is a great need to improve the law. He noted that it would be good to involve representatives of national minorities in the process.

The NCAG chairman also noted that although there are more than 700,000 members of ethnic minorities in Georgia, local TV channels give them almost no airtime.

At the initiative of the ruling Georgian Dream Party, the law against discrimination on the basis of ethnicity and incitement to ethnic hatred will be tightened. The bill submitted to parliament envisages harsher penalties for discrimination.
