A commemorative event dedicated to the 30th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide, one of the most horrific pages in the history of Azerbaijan, was held in New York at the initiative and organization of the Permanent Mission of Azerbaijan to the United Nations, Report informs.
The event was attended by Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative to the UN Yashar Aliyev, diplomats on the mission, and a group of activists from the Azerbaijani community in New York.
First, the National Anthem of Azerbaijan was voiced, and the memory of the victims of the Khojaly tragedy was commemorated.
Yashar Aliyev said that no foreign force could break the will and strength of the Azerbaijani people, who have passed the most difficult tests in all periods of history but preferred their independence above all else. Khojaly was the most complex and terrible of these tests. The residents of Khojaly, the victims of Armenian atrocities, wrote history with their blood in one night.
He said that although the Khojaly massacre was part of Armenia's planned policy of ethnic cleansing and aggression against Azerbaijan for many years, it did not achieve its goals.
The diplomat said that the country's leadership had pursued a purposeful policy over the past years to convey our voice to the world and promote the Khojaly genocide in the international arena. As part of the global propaganda campaign "Justice for Khojaly", events and rallies were held in various cities and states of the United States, and as a result, American society has already been sufficiently informed about the tragedy.
According to Aliyev, the Khojaly genocide was recognized by a number of countries, including 23 US states, and the tragedy was given an international political assessment. Emphasizing the need for the continued success of the Azerbaijani community in this field, the ambassador said that the Khojaly genocide would be given a legal assessment in the near future, and the perpetrators of this terrible tragedy will be punished.
Speaking at the event, President of the Azerbaijan New York Association Erjan Yerdalanli and Head of the Mountain Jews Community Yakov Abramov said that the Azerbaijani community in the United States has traditionally commemorated the victims of the Khojaly genocide for 30 years. Emphasizing the importance of introducing the atrocities in Khojaly to the new generation, the speakers said that their wars would continue until justice for Khojaly is done.
In the end, a documentary film reflecting the atrocities committed in Khojaly was shown.
