US city of Aventura declares February 26 a day of remembrance of Khojaly genocide

The mayor of Aventura, Florida, Enid Weizmann, has declared February 26, 2021, as the day of remembrance of the Khojaly genocide.

President of the Florida Azerbaijani-American Cultural Association Tohfa Eminova told the local Bureau of Report.

The statement issued on the 29th anniversary of the Khojaly genocide states that more than 600 innocent people, including women and children, were killed due to the massacre committed by the Armenian armed forces against the Azerbaijani civilian population on the night of February 25-26, 1992.

According to Human Rights Watch, the Khojaly genocide is the largest massacre in the region. Aventura Mayor E. These events heralded terrible losses and showed the importance of better understanding and tolerance of people worldwide.

According to Eminova, the mayor likened the Khojaly genocide to the Holocaust tragedy committed by the Nazis against the Jews.

Eminova said the proclamation was adopted due to close cooperation between the Florida Azerbaijani-American Cultural Association and the mayor of Aventura.

Notably, more than 24 US states, including Arizona, Arkansas, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Jersey, Nevada, New York. Mexico, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wisconsin have recognized and condemned the Khojaly genocide.
