Aygun Aliyeva: International organizations should support Azerbaijan in demining

Today, more than 60 countries in the world suffer from landmines, and Azerbaijan is at the forefront of this list, Aygun Aliyeva, Executive Director of the Agency for State Support to NGOs, said at the International Baku Forum themed "Healthy environment and mine-free life to achieve sustainable development goals", Report informs.

"During the occupation, Armenia buried more than 1.5 million mines and unexploded ordnance in the territories of Azerbaijan. According to experts, the location of mines, types of military ammunition, and other technical circumstances found in the freed territories indicate that they have been buried every year for the last 30 years and replaced by new mines for any reason. After the Patriotic War, 338 people hit landmines in the liberated areas, 65 people died. 273 people received various degrees of injuries. Among the injured, 9 are children and young people, and 1 is a woman. Since 1991, 3,418 people have been injured by mines in Azerbaijan," she noted.

According to her, Azerbaijan carries out demining works using the most modern technologies available in the world.

"90 percent of this activity is carried out at the expense of the country's internal resources. Support from overseas is limited. This support must increase."
