The European Court of Human Rights has made several decisions related to the right to a clean environment, but there are still important questions that need to be addressed, Duro Sessa, President of the International Association of Judges, said in his statement to journalists at the opening ceremony of the international conference "Law and Climate" held in Baku, Report informs.
Sessa emphasized the significance of the conference, stating: "The event proposes a new topic for the legal field as a whole. The conference discusses how to combine law and the right to a clean environment. Until now, this issue was dealt with by the academic community, but now courts are also involved. We discussed how the right to a clean environment is ensured in different countries. In democratic states, courts make decisions on these issues."
According to Sessa, certain court decisions have been made so far, most of which pertain to the European Court of Human Rights. "However, there are some issues that need to be addressed, with the main question being whether the right to a clean environment is an international or national-level topic," he said.
