Last year, the volume of pollutants emitted into the atmosphere from stationary sources and cars in Azerbaijan increased by 39,500 tons compared to 2020 and amounted to 880,200 tons, Report informs, citing the State Statistics Committee.
Car emissions accounted for 82.2% or 723,500 tons of it. The volume of harmful substances emitted from cars increased by 4.2%, and the volume of substances emitted from stationary sources increased by 6.8%. The volume of harmful emissions from stationary sources increased by 6,300 tons in Baku, one of the industrial centers, 1,600 tons in Mingachevir and 700 tons in Sumgayit.
As a result of preventive measures, 65.7% of harmful substances generated in stationary sources were captured and neutralized last year through treatment facilities. As a result of improving technological processes at industrial enterprises and increasing the efficiency of existing treatment plants to reduce the amount of harmful substances released into the atmosphere, 121,100 tons of harmful substances were prevented from being released into the air during the year.
Also, 58.5% of all harmful emissions from all sources were carbon monoxide, 25.6% hydrocarbons, 12.0% nitrogen oxides, 0.3% sulfur dioxide, and the rest of other pollutants.
