Due to global warming, the Caspian Sea is in danger of large-scale shallowing. The volume of the water basin is continuously decreasing.
Report informs that German and Dutch scientists published the study in Nature Communications Earth & Environment journal. Scientists believe that rising temperatures in the region could have catastrophic consequences for the local population and nature.
Thus, the Caspian Sea may shrink three times in 2100.
Scientists believe that one of the main reasons for this is a decrease in annual rainfall. Besides, a significant part of the water flowing into the sea is used for irrigation.
Shallowing of the sea can lead to the extinction of the Caspian seal. The number of these aquatic mammals is already declining.
This situation is not unique and took place in the post-Soviet space - the Aral Sea has practically disappeared.
Earlier, the head of the department of the geomorphology of the Caspian Sea shores and seabed of the Institute of Geography named after academician H. A. Aliyev of ANAS, Doctor of Geographical Sciences, Professor Amir Aliyev said that the Caspian Sea has no direct connection to the world ocean. So it is natural for it to change, that is, to rise and fall.
