Albanian minister: 'We are taking steps to diversify energy production portfolio'

Albania receives 100% of its electricity from renewable sources and is taking important steps to diversify its energy production portfolio, Albania's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure and Energy Belinda Balluku said at the ministerial dialogue within COP29 in Baku, Report informs.

She noted that although the country's energy supply has relied on hydroelectric power plants for many years, solar and wind energy production began in 2019: "Albania has developed a roadmap aimed at implementing renewable energy storage capacities, and support will be provided for new projects with 1.8 gigawatts capacity for two large pumped storage facilities."

Balluku added that since 2019, all consumers in Albania have been given the opportunity to generate their own energy and implement projects up to 1 megawatt for grid connection: "This policy is applied in many areas to improve energy efficiency. Additionally, work has begun to create a foundation for training qualified personnel in the energy sector."
