Poland to reduce share of coal in energy sector to 8%

The Polish authorities plan to reduce the share of coal in the energy sector from the current 77% to 8% by 2040. By that time, renewable energy sources will meet 50% of the demand, Report informs via the Rzeczpospolita newspaper.

The Polish government intends to allocate 726 billion złoty (almost $170 billion) for green transformation; 86% of this amount will go to investments in nuclear power plants, wind energy and photovoltaics. It is planned that in 17 years, Poland will receive over 50% of its energy needs from renewable energy sources.

In 2040, the share of renewable energy and nuclear power is expected to be 50.8% and 22.6%, respectively. Meanwhile, the share of coal, which has been the basis of the Polish energy sector for almost 100 years, will be reduced to 8%.
