SOCAR conducts satellite monitoring to detect emissions

Satellite monitoring has begun to identify emissions in the oil and gas operation areas of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan (SOCAR) within the framework of cooperation with GHGSat company, SOCAR's Vice President Afgan Isayev said during his speech at the plenary session of the Summit on "Methane and non-CO2 greenhouse gases" held within COP29, Report informs.

Speaking at the plenary session of the summit, Afgan Isayev provided detailed information to the participants about the company's activities in reducing methane and non-CO2 emissions, advanced technologies applied in this direction, and solutions. The vice president noted that the measurement of methane emissions in SOCAR's areas of operation are carried out in accordance with international standards.

Also, within the partnership with TotalEnergies, drone measurements are being carried out using AUSEA technology. In addition, on-site measurements are conducted in production areas using instrumental tools and devices. The indicators obtained during satellite, drone, and on-site measurements are promptly processed and thoroughly analyzed in the artificial intelligence-based Methane AI tool, and measures are taken to eliminate emission sources.

Isayev emphasized that SOCAR closely cooperates with organizations such as MGP and OGCI to increase efficiency in reducing methane emissions, align activities with international standards, and ensure effectiveness and transparency. These activities are indicators of SOCAR's resolute activity aimed at reducing methane emissions.
