Turkiye starts laying pipes for Black Sea gas project

Turkiye is embarking on the most important stage in the implementation of a project to extract natural gas from the Sakarya field in the Black Sea. On June 10, the laying of pipes of the 170-kilometer gas pipeline at a depth of up to 2 km will begin, the work is scheduled to be completed within five months, according to the Yeni Safak newspaper, Report informs referring to TASS.

Pipe laying will be carried out by special vessels "Kastoro-10" and "Kastrone". In total, about 20 ships and over 4,000 people will be involved in the work.

The first gas from the Sakarya field, according to plans, will begin to flow to consumers in Turkiye in the first quarter of 2023. At the initial stage, it is planned to produce about 10 million cubic meters of gas per day from the field, or 3.4-4 billion per year. By 2027-2028, the daily volume of gas production should be 40 million cubic meters, the annual volumes will grow to 15 billion cubic meters.

Turkish authorities announced the discovery of gas in the Black Sea with predicted reserves of 540 billion cubic meters in 2020. The reserves of the largest field, Sakarya, were reported to exceed 400 billion cubic meters. Turkiye intends to invest about $10 billion in the development of the field.
