Azerbaijan's permanent rep to UN presents facts in response to Armenian diplomat's false statements

Azerbaijan's Permanent Representative to the UN Yashar Aliyev spoke at the discussions on 'The Rule of Law among Nations' held at the UN Security Council in New York, Report informs.

The ambassador first congratulated the permanent representatives of Ecuador, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, and Switzerland, who were elected as new members of the UN Security Council.

Later, Aliyev spoke about the goals of the UN and said that the organization works to protect international peace and security, as well as to prevent war and humanitarian problems.

The ambassador said that, unfortunately, in the first years of its membership in the UN, Azerbaijan was subjected to the aggression of Armenia based on monoethnic ideology:

"Despite Azerbaijan's responsible approach to the main principles of the UN Charter, especially the principles of peaceful settlement of disputes and non-use of force, Armenia occupied a large territory of Azerbaijan for nearly 30 years. Amid the failure of mediation talks with the OSCE leadership, resolutions 822, 853, 874, and 884 of the UN Security Council unanimously adopted in 1993 were ignored by Armenia."

The ambassador said that international institutions' neglect of their obligations and application of double standards further encourages Armenia to continue its insidious policy.

He provided information about the reconstruction and restoration works in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan after the 44-day Patriotic War. He also brought to the attention of the members that the Karabakh and East Zangazur economic regions were created by the decree of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev dated July 7, 2021.

According to him, Azerbaijan and Armenia took the initiative to normalize interstate relations within the framework of respect for mutual territorial integrity and sovereignty.

In addition, the ambassador commented on the false accusations voiced by the representative of Armenia at the meeting:

"It is paradoxical that Armenia, which started its aggression against Azerbaijan, occupied its sovereign territories for nearly 30 years, pursued a policy of ethnic cleansing, and committed unprecedented crimes during the war, now appeals to the UN Charter and international law."

In the end, Aliyev stressed the importance of the international community's support for bilateral and purposeful negotiations based on principles and commitments agreed between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
