The 35th session of the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent will be held from December 2 to 6 at UN Headquarters in New York, Report informs.
The event is considered one of the most significant international platforms for protecting the rights of people of African descent and addressing the consequences of historical injustice.
The session will include a side event "Restoring Justice and Decolonization: Protecting the Rights of People of African Descent in Colonized Territories," organized by the Bonaire Human Rights Organization, the Permanent Mission of the Bahamas to the UN, and the Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent.
Abbas Abbasov, Executive Director of the Baku Initiative Group (BIG), will participate in the session. BIG will present its projects aimed at overcoming the consequences of colonialism and discuss initiatives to restore the rights of oppressed peoples.
The session and side event will focus on historical injustices, socio-economic inequalities, and human rights challenges faced by people of African descent. The main goal will be to restore their rights, remove obstacles within international law, and develop recommendations for long-term solutions.
The Baku Initiative Group will present its achievements, current projects, and priorities at the session. The organization continues to work for international recognition of the rights of peoples affected by colonialism, addressing historical injustices, and supporting their struggle for freedom.
BIG has made significant contributions to Bonaire people's struggle for liberation from colonial oppression. The organization collaborates in protecting cultural heritage, human rights, and developing specific solutions within international law.
These efforts culminated in an international conference held on August 22, 2024, in Baku titled "Bonaire’s pathway from Baku through UN General Assembly to Self-Determination." The event was attended by representatives of Bonaire's people, as well as high-ranking officials, human rights activists, NGO leaders, experts, and scholars from Belize, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Saint Lucia, the United Kingdom, Mexico, and the Netherlands.
The conference discussed international legal mechanisms for achieving independence for Bonaire's people and work on returning the island to the UN List of Non-Self-Governing Territories.
The Baku Initiative Group's participation in such events emphasizes Azerbaijan's leading role in international decolonization processes and its contribution to restoring the rights of peoples affected by colonialism.
BIG's activities, highly praised by the international community, are at the center of global efforts to support peoples' struggle for freedom and rights.
