The extension of membership and chairmanship of Azerbaijan at the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) is very prestigious and gives the country access to the partnership with all members of the second-largest international organization after the UN General Assembly, Matthew Bryza, an international expert and senior fellow at the US Atlantic Council, told Report.
This year, the NAM member states unanimously decided to extend the term of Azerbaijan’s chairmanship for another year - until the end of 2023.
Bryza also noted that in his speech at a high-level jubilee event in Belgrade dedicated to the 60th anniversary of the NAM, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev talked about the basic fundamental principles of NAM which are: respecting the territorial integrity of states, non-use of force, and non-intervention into the domestic affairs of member-states.
Bryza noted that in particular, the president emphasized how important territorial integrity is and how the international community has been following the double standards for years by doing nothing to enforce the four UN Security Council Resolutions, calling for Azerbaijan’s territorial integrity to be restored.
