International coalition calls on Armenia to recognize Khojaly genocide

A seminar on the role of civil society dialogue in the path of peace and justice was held today within the framework of the 51st session of the UN Human Rights Council.

The event held at the UN Office in Geneva was organized by the Khojaly: Confess for Peace Coalition.

The president of the Association Mothers of the Srebrenica, well-known human rights activist Munira Subašić, who acted as the main speaker at the seminar, drew attention to the similarity between Srebrenica and the Khojaly genocide and noted with regret that the Armenian leadership has not yet accepted responsibility for the biggest massacre that occurred during the Karabakh conflict:

"This is one of the main obstacles to achieving sustainable peace between the two nations in the post-conflict period. There can be no reconciliation without trust, and trust cannot be established without establishing the truth."

Subašić urged Armenia to face its past.

The Communiqué adopted as a result of the discussions conducted by the Coalition members at the event called on the Armenian leadership to recognize the Khojaly genocide. The visits of the members of the Coalition to Azerbaijan and Armenia will be organized in the near future in order to launch a direct dialogue between Armenian and Azerbaijani civil societies. The Communiqué calls on the governments of the two countries to create conditions for the visits and on the international institutions and human rights organizations to support the goals of the Coalition.
