Russia actively supported the idea of the 3+3 format when it was proposed by President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told a press conference, Report informs.
"Efforts to normalize Turkish-Armenian relations contribute to the normalization of the situation in the South Caucasus and help create the conditions for the still remaining political problems to be resolved much more actively and fruitfully through, among other things, the development of economic and other cooperation between the three countries of the South Caucasus and their three neighbors - Russia, Turkey and Iran," he said.
Lavrov noted that Georgia's participation in the negotiations in the 3 + 3 format is beneficial for this country and does not infringe on its interests in any way. "Since Georgia has severed diplomatic relations with us, we have fewer opportunities for interaction. We turned to other participants in the format with a request to explain to our Georgian neighbors the benefits of joining this format, which does not oblige them to anything regarding their political positions," Lavrov said, answering whether Russia will do something for Georgia to join the format.
According to Lavrov, Georgia could join these negotiations without preconditions. He assured that the format will discuss "solely topics of interest to all participants."
