Members of the Italian Senate from the Italia Viva (Italy Alive) Party, President of the Senate Parliamentary Commission, Senator Mauro Maria Marino, and Vice President of the Standing Commission for External Affairs and Emigration Senator Laura Garavini sent an official inquiry to the Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation on the possible contribution of Italy to the demining of the liberated territories of Azerbaijan, the Azerbaijani Embassy in Italy told Report.
According to the inquiry, the second Karabakh war ended with the signing of a trilateral declaration between Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Russia on November 10, 2020, the conflict finished with the liberation of Shusha and other Azerbaijani territories from Armenian occupation, and Azerbaijan regained its sovereignty over its territories recognized under UN Security Council Resolutions 822, 853, 874 and 884 of 1993 and international law.
According to the materials submitted by Azerbaijan to the International Court of Justice on the case against Armenia, 75% of the liberated territories were mined during the occupation by Armenia, and mines are located outside the military posts - in densely populated areas, agricultural areas, as well as on economically and socially essential lands, as well as in areas where there are cemeteries. The inquiry also noted that the main urgent issue facing the establishment of lasting peace, security, and stability in the region in the post-conflict period is the demining of these areas.
The final part of the inquiry refers to the visit of Manlio Di Stefano, Undersecretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Co-Chair of the Joint Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation between Azerbaijan and Italy, to the liberated territories of Azerbaijan in December 2020. The issue of Italy's possible contribution to the demining of the liberated territories of Azerbaijan and about bilateral or multilateral mechanisms, as well as diplomatic channels were surveyed.
