UN clarifies fate of several missing Azerbaijanis captured by Armenia

The UN has clarified the fate of several Azerbaijanis who were taken prisoner by Armenia and went missing, Gabriella Citroni, Chair-Rapporteur of the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances, told Report.

She noted that as a result of investigations, the fate of several missing Azerbaijanis was clarified.

"There are several Azerbaijanis whose fate has been clarified by the Armenian side based on our appeal. Although sometimes the answers we receive, unfortunately, indicate the death of these people, we consider these results relatively satisfactory. Because, even if the family cannot get answers to all questions, this process, although very painful, helps them, in a sense, to open a new page in life," said Citroni.

According to her, the Working Group often plays a coordinating role in terms of clarifying the fate of missing persons.

"After receiving an appeal from a family, we contact the state [involved in a person's disappearance]. That is, we play a connecting role, acting as a kind of communication channel between families and the government," added Gabriella Citroni.

Over the past 30 years, more than 4,000 Azerbaijanis are still considered missing as a result of Armenian aggression.
