A billion doses of the coronavirus vaccines have been distributed to countries worldwide through the COVAX mechanism,
“COVAX has now delivered its first billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines to 144 countries and territories across the world!” GAVI tweeted.
The alliance stressed that it is proud to work with the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), World Health Organization (WHO), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the ACT-Accelerator partnership (launched by WHO and partners), and others on the largest and most rapid global vaccine rollout in history.
The WHO and GAVI launched the COVAX initiative in April 2020 to ensure that developing countries have access to vaccines.
By July 2020, more than 160 countries joined the mechanism, pooling their resources to obtain vaccines as soon as possible and distribute them to third-world countries.
