Infectious disease specialist: Azerbaijan will continue to experience high incidence rate

"The rising tendency in infection cases is related to the delta strain. This strain is, on average, 30-50 % more contagious than COVID-19. If the delta variant is more contiguous, then the mortality rate is also high. Considering the statistics, we can observe that while the morbidity made 4-5% in the previous Covid variant, it varies between 10-12 percent in the delta strain. When we compare last year's figures with this year's, we see that the number of deaths has almost doubled," Vugar Javadzadeh, a doctor of philosophy in medicine and an infectious disease specialist, told Report.

He said there are people who still ignore the quarantine rules.

"After the restrictions were mitigated in the summer, people forgot about COVID-19 and did not wear masks indoors, and held festivities with 200-300 people. There is now a slight increase in the number of people vaccinated due to introduction of COVID passports. I think that the infection will continue for another 20 days and one month with high rates. After that, we may observe a relative slowdown. Therefore, people should be jabbed because vaccination is the first step in preventing the disease.

The infectious disease specialist noted that some people do not care about the temperature: "They blame it on cold and air conditioner, do not receive proper treatment at home, and delay. Complications begin in the second week of the disease, and an infected person ends up in hospital. We know that there is no specific cure for this virus. If it were, so many people would not die in hospitals. Doctors are not magicians. For those severely ill, signing out is just a matter of chance. Officially, 40-45 people die in hospitals every day, and unofficial figures are probably twice as high.

Javadzadeh addressed people: "Do not be indifferent to your lives, do not take medicines prescribed by nurses at home. Some nurses prescribe drugs that are contraindicated in the treatment of the virus. Most of them recommend serums in pursuance of their own interests. One of such serums costs 30-50 manats. They prescribe several serums to get much money, which worsens a patient's condition. People should seek medical advise. There is a sufficient number of infectious disease specialists in the country."
