Number of COVID-related deaths increases by over 40% globally

Mortality from coronavirus over the past week increased by 43%; the incidence fell by 14%, reads the weekly epidemiological bulletin of the World Health Organization (WHO), Report informs via Interfax.

Between March 21 and March 27, the incidence of coronavirus fell in all regions. The most significant drop in new cases was observed in the Eastern Mediterranean (down 32%), Africa (down 29%) and the Western Pacific region (down 24%).

In just a week, about 10.8 million cases of COVID-19 were detected worldwide.

Deaths from coronavirus increased in only two regions, but significantly: in America, the number of deaths increased by 182%, and in Southeast Asia by 116%. This is most likely due to a change in the definition of "death from COVID-19" in some countries in the Americas, as well as retroactive adjustments in India, the bulletin notes.

In total, about 45,000 deaths caused by COVID-19 were recorded worldwide over the past week.

Since the pandemic onset, about 485.2 million cases of coronavirus infection and more than 6.1 million deaths from the consequences of the disease have been detected in the world.
