Over 58,000 measles cases recorded in WHO European region

Last year alone, more than 58,000 measles cases were recorded in 41 out of 53 countries in the European region of the World Health Organization (WHO), Report informs, citing the WHO Office in Azerbaijan.

It was noted that the measles vaccine has been used worldwide since 1963: In 14 years, starting in 1974, the measles vaccines were available in all 53 countries included in the European region of the WHO. As a result of these efforts, the spread of measles has decreased sharply over the last 50 years.

Reportedly, it is important to keep vaccination coverage high at all times to protect our communities from measles outbreaks: "Let's not forget that vaccination remains the safest and most effective way to protect ourselves and our loved ones."
