Azerbaijan will help Pacific and Caribbean countries manage climate risks by transmitting space data and ensuring they build their own programs in the next phases, Dunay Badirkhanov, Deputy Chairman of the Space Agency (Azercosmos) under Azerbaijan’s Ministry of Digital Development and Transport, told Report.

According to Badirkhanov, Azerbaijan's growing role in space and global cooperation is strengthening due to its support in fighting climate change: "One of the important projects implemented by Azercosmos involves transmitting space data to small island states in the Pacific and Caribbean basins."

Badirkhanov stated that based on new agreements with UN member states, Azercosmos has begun supporting countries in this region with climate risk management: "Under the project, these countries receive space data and technical knowledge in areas such as drought assessment, carbon dioxide level monitoring, water resource management, and forest cover depletion monitoring."

He noted that concrete steps have already been taken in the initial phase: Azercosmos aims to share its experience to increase small island states' resilience against climate risks and enable their independent operation. In the next phases, the knowledge and technologies provided by Azerbaijan will be fully transferred to these countries, enabling them to build their own programs.

Badirkhanov emphasized that this initiative is not just an example of international cooperation but also an important platform for demonstrating Azerbaijan's global leadership in fighting climate change.

It's reported that the agency provides numerous support to climate change fighting institutions in small island states like Congo, Tuvalu, Dominican Republic, Bahamas, and Papua New Guinea with its obtained data. This includes monitoring forest areas, agricultural lands, coastlines, researching best solutions for protection against rare natural phenomena like tsunamis, and taking preventive steps for drought, flood, and inundation preparedness. Additionally, training sessions are conducted for these countries due to their limited knowledge and experience in processing space data.
