"We are preparing a team that will be able to compete against the world's strongest national teams," said Aleksandr Tarakanov, the head coach of Azerbaijan's Greco-Roman wrestling team, Report informs.
"The President of Azerbaijan Wrestling Federation, Mikayil Jabbarov, supports us, athletes and coaches, monitors each of our performances and participates in resolving all issues related to training and competitions. The Federation is always with us - we discuss any matters and find joint solutions," Tarakanov noted.
He added that at the recently concluded World Wrestling Championships in Albania in non-Olympic weight categories, Azerbaijani Greco-Roman wrestlers showed outstanding results: three athletes became champions, and one took fifth place.
"This is a success not only for wrestlers and coaches but for the entire federation. The preparation went according to schedule, and we can be proud of such results," he added.
Nevertheless, Tarakanov apologized to Azerbaijani fans for the team winning only one medal at the Olympics: "We expected higher results, but sport is always a test. However, now we have formed a strong team, and we are focused on Olympic weight categories to create maximum competition."
Tarakanov emphasized that young wrestlers aged 21-23 will represent the country at the upcoming World and European Championships in the U-23 category, which will strengthen the national team and ensure necessary competitive growth.
"Azerbaijani wrestlers are already achieving high results in the international arena, and we are creating a team that will become a serious competitor for the world's strongest countries. I am confident that in Los Angeles we will return with equally bright victories, bringing joy to fans and all residents of Azerbaijan," Tarakanov added.
