According to the agreement between the former USSR and Iran, a permanent Azerbaijan-Iran Joint Commission has been established to operatively resolve issues related to the joint use of water and energy resources of the Araz River, Report informs, citing Azerbaijan Amelioration and Water Management OJSC.
According to the report, the Commission agreed on the equal distribution of water resources of the river between the two countries. The commission continues operating after Azerbaijan gained independence. The draft minutes of the 50th meeting of the Joint Commission were discussed at a meeting through video conferencing on May 24. Ajdar Javadov and Elkhan Huseynov, heads of departments of the joint-stock company, and Asif Verdiyev, a representative of the Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, took part in the meeting chaired by Zakir Guliyev, deputy chairman of the Azerbaijan Amelioration and Water Management OJSC.
A protocol will be signed at the 50th anniversary meeting of the Azerbaijan-Iran Joint Commission for the Use of Water and Energy Resources of the Araz River on May 31 on the Araz Dam.
