OSCE rep hails cooperation with Azerbaijan in media sector as 'constructive'

Azerbaijan and the OSCE are cooperating constructively in the field of media, Teresa Ribeiro, the OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, said at a roundtable at ADA University on the rise of disinformation and its impact on the media landscape, Report informs.

According to Ribeiro, her office supports Azerbaijan in developing media freedom.

Speaking about the problem of the growing disinformation in the modern world, the OSCE representative noted that disinformation is a threat to society, can damage trust and even affect relations between countries.

“Today, thanks to modern technology, everyone has quick access to information. People believe what they see everywhere on social networks, then pass it on to others, thus increasing the volume of misinformation. The audience tends to trust what they see on social media. In this way, disinformation destroys the credibility of a good journalist and can also cause attacks on them,” she said.

She called for a fight against disinformation, in this regard, emphasizing the importance of freedom of the media and the inadmissibility of censorship, which limits the work of the media.

According to her, the legal framework should protect the activities of journalists, thus allowing them to be free.
