ADB to provide $1.5 billion in assistance to flood-stricken Pakistan

By the end of October, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide Pakistan with $1.5 billion in budgetary support, Bank's General Director for Central and Western Asia, Eugene Zhukov, said during a media briefing.

The budgetary support is aimed at helping the people of Pakistan to deal with the consequences of major floods.

In addition, ADB is looking to prepare more targeted emergency support, which is expected to be approved by the end of the year, Zhukov added.

According to Pakistan's National Disaster Management Agency (NDMA), 1,545 people, including 552 children and 315 women, have been killed and 12,850 injured as a result of the rains since June 14.

Heavy rains and floods affected 1,921,622 houses, of which 765,162 were completely destroyed.

Overall, 33.4 million people were affected by floods.
