“The population of mainland China reached 1.41178 billion in 2020, an increase of 72.06 million (5.38%) since 2010,” NBS said. In 2019, the country's population was 1.40005 billion people.
According to the statistics, there are approximately 723.34 million men and 688.44 million women in the country. About 63.35% of the population are people aged 15 to 59 years, and about 18.7% are over 60 years old. The share of citizens in the age category up to 14 years old was 17.95%.
According to the agency, the share of urban residents in China hovers at 63.89%, which is 14.21 percentage points more than in 2010.
The NBS specifies that approximately 40% of the PRC's population lives in the eastern part of the country, about a quarter in the central region, and only 7% in northeast China. Besides, compared with 2010, the population of the provinces of the northeast region decreased by 1.2 percentage points.
Ethnically, 91.11% of the country's residents are Han Chinese, the remaining 8.89% are national minorities. Over the past 10 years, these two categories have increased by 4.93% and 10.26%, respectively.
