An earthquake of magnitude 4.8 occurred 78 km southwest of Palaiochora, Greece, the National Observatory of Athens (NOA) said, Report informs.
The quake hit at a shallow depth of 10 km beneath the epicenter near Palaiochora, Chania, Crete, Greece, early in the morning on Friday, January 12th, 2024, at 5:51 am local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.
A second report was later issued by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), which listed it as a magnitude-4.6 earthquake. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.7.
