The European Commission (EC) won’t finance construction of the wall on the border of Belarus and Lithuania from the EU budget, the official representative of the European Commission (EC) Adalbert Janz said at a briefing in Brussels on Aug. 10, Report informs referring to TASS.
He noted that the European Commission doesn’t consider it correct to finance the construction of walls and barriers from EU funds. Therefore, this infrastructure facility should not be financed from EU funds, he said, answering a question about the possibility of funding the wall to block the flow of migrants at the border of Lithuania and Belarus from the EU budget.
Earlier, the Lithuanian authorities decided to protect themselves from migrants from Belarus with a four-meter fence. It will be made of welded wire mesh, over which barbed wire with sharp blades used by the military will be stretched. The construction of the ‘wall’ will take 152 million euros and two years. President Gitanas Nauseda considers that the period is too long. He called for the participation of all interested and experienced parties in the construction.
