European Parliament initiates vote of no confidence in European Commission

The European Parliament has initiated a proposal to put to the vote of MEPs a vote of no confidence in the European Commission (EC), headed by Ursula von der Leyen, Report informs referring to foreign media.

The reason for this was the permission of the EC to provide funding to Poland for 35.4 billion euros under the recovery plan, which was blocked by Brussels for a year for claims against Warsaw on compliance with the rules of a constitutional state.

According to three representatives of the liberal faction of the EP Renovate Europe - Sophie in’t Veld, the ex-premier of Belgium Guy Verhofstadt and the deputy head of the faction of the Spaniard Luis Garicano, this contradicts the principles of allocating allied funds to member states. They called on the European Parliament to cast their votes of no confidence in the EC.

This faction includes deputies from the French presidential Renaissance party. France will preside over the Council of the EU until the end of June.

On June 1, the European Commission gave permission to the Polish recovery plan, considering that the steps taken by Warsaw in the field of judicial reform, in particular the vote in the Polish parliament to abolish the disciplinary chamber, which was supposed to control judges, give grounds to unblock EU assistance.

However, the initiators of the vote of no confidence consider the actions of the Polish authorities insufficient, saying that they don’t correspond to what the European Court demanded, and do not cancel the refusal of the Polish authorities to recognize the rule of law of the EU. According to the authors of the proposal, Warsaw shows no intention to fully restore the independence of the judiciary.
