European Parliament votes for agreement on EU-UK relations

The European Parliament (EP) has approved an agreement on bilateral relations between the European Union and Great Britain after the kingdom left the community, Report informs referring to DW.

Leading Belgian MEP Guy Verhofstadt tweeted on April 28 morning that the European Parliament had approved ‘the EU-UK trade and cooperation agreement!’

“The first trade deal in history to put up barriers & remove freedoms? A failure for both sides, but better than nothing. I still believe one day an ambitious young politician will want the UK in the EU again,” he added.

According to the head of the EP David Sassoli, 660 MEPs voted for the agreement, five people opposed it, 32 parliamentarians abstained.

The EP’s approval of the agreement was immediately greeted by the presidents of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen and the European Council Charles Michel.

“I warmly welcome the European Parliament vote in favor of the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. The TCA marks the foundation of a strong and close partnership with the UK. Faithful implementation is essential,” von der Leyen tweeted.

“I warmly welcome the results of the vote by the European Parliament on the EU-UK Trade and Cooperation Agreement. It marks a major step forward in EU-UK relations and opens a new era. The EU will continue to work constructively with the UK as an important friend and partner,” Michel tweeted.
