Hague Tribunal may probe Ukraine situation

Prosecutor Karim Khan of the International Criminal Court (ICC) expressed concern about the Russian invasion of Ukraine and said that the court could take up the case, Report informs, quoting an official statement of the ICC prosecutor.

Karim Khan recalled that since 2015, from the filing of an application by the Ukrainian government, the ICC officially has the authority to investigate violations of international humanitarian law committed on Ukrainian territory, including temporarily occupied territories.

"Following developments in and around Ukraine... I remind all parties that commit violence on Ukrainian territory that my office can exercise its jurisdiction to investigate any acts of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes committed in Ukraine," the statement reads.

The ICC prosecutor is currently on a business trip to Bangladesh in connection with one of the court cases but plans to follow developments in Ukraine. He also promises further steps to investigate this case. "Upon my return to Hague, I plan to issue a more detailed statement on the situation in Ukraine, clarifying my assessments and the next steps that I see in this case," he said.
